Is social networking and texting damaging our creativity?

Quote:
"Yes, young people sometimes accidentally slip a btw (by the way) into a school essay. But a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project confirms that middle school and high school students understand what kind of language is appropriate in what context (Lenhart, Smith, & Macgill, 2008). What's more, scholars of new media language, such as David Crystal and Beverly Plester, remind us that the new technologies encourage creativity, which can spill over into school writing (Crystal, 2008; Plester, Wood, & Bell, 2008)."

Me being a person that uses social networking and texting every day, I feel that this is helping us instead of hurting us. I feel that the quote I have chosen compliments my thoughts very well about the digital media changing our language. I feel that it is for the better! We have technology that helps us with spellcheck and grammar, this allows us to realize when we've misspelled a word and will help us with our mistakes. This allows us to become better at grammar and spelling, what's so bad about that? Adults I feel have the wrong opinions of texting and social networking, they feel that it's dumbing the younger population down, but in reality it's doing just the opposite. As for social networking, I feel that it helps our communication skills, it allows us to become closer than ever before with our friends and family. This is 2011, we ALL must accept this and embrace it so text, Tweet, and Facebook away it's actually doing good for your mind! So, the answer is no, its improving our creativity and allowing us to become better more educated people.

I feel this video is appropriate because it shows us the effects of soical networking and how much it's an impact on our society and how many people actually use it.
